Golf optional communities are just that – optional. These communities are generally loaded with additional amenities, golf being just one of them (tennis, fitness centers, dining, etc). There are a few communities built around public courses that don’t require any membership at all, but most are private. They will usually offer some sort of tiered membership for the occasional golfer that limits play during the winter for a lower initiation fee. Full members play when they want and how often they want. If you’re the type of golfer that says “I can quit anytime I want”, these communities may be for you.
